A deal to swap 41 newspapers between two of the country's largest media outlets Monday will mean the end of several publications in Eastern Ontario. Postmedia Network Inc. and Torstar Corp. plan to close 36 community and metro newspapers between this week and mid-January, including the Frontenac Gazette, Kingston Heritage and Brockville-based St. Lawrence News. The plan will eliminate 291 jobs and save each company between $5 mil- lion to $7 million annual- ly. Postmedia acquired 22 community newspapers and two free dailies from Torstar subsidiaries Metroland Media Group, with many produced and printed at Performance Printing in Smiths Falls. It is unclear what affect that will have on the Smiths Falls operation that will still be publishing the EMC along with some other Metroland publica- tions. The Review-Mirror, locally owned and pro- duced, is printed in Smiths Falls. The transaction was effectively non-cash as the properties exchanged were worth roughly the same amount. The Eastern Ontario Metroland publications acquired by Postmedia slated to close by mid-Jan- uary also include Belleville News, Central Hastings News, Kanata K o u r i e r - S t a n d a r d , Nepean/Barrhaven News, Orleans News, Ottawa East News, Ottawa South News, Ottawa West News, Quinte West News, Stittsville News and the West Carleton Review.
