Food bank volunteers with the help of the Build a Mountain of Food regional campaign gath- ered almost $15,000 in donations and more than a ton of food last Saturday. The morning collection in Westport outside of Kudrinko's Country Gro- cer came through for those-in-need Saturday when the Westport food bank received: $7,540 and 2,630 lbs of food. "We very much appre- ciate all the food we got on Saturday and the dol- lars. The generosity is overwhelming of the folks of Westport and the sur- rounding area," said West- port food bank treasurer Norm Lapointe. The generosity contin- ued in Elgin where with the help of the Build a Mountain crew volunteers received donations at Gor- danier's Grocery of 2,640 lbs. of food and $7,024 in cash donations. "There was a good spattering of groups from across the community. We're so happy to see that they came together. They are a real blessing to the food bank," said Pastor Bob Crump. The success of the December campaign is essential for the food bank to have the capacity to serve its clients from its home at the church. The good deeds contin- ue this Saturday morning when Build a Mountain comes to downtown Port- land between the LCBO and Royal Bank. The campaign contin- ues in the afternoon in Merrickville to benefit the Lions Christmas hamper campaign there. On Dec. 16 the six- weekend campaign winds up with a stop at the Athens Freshmart in the morning before a last stop in Delta at the Country Market. This year's campaign has already gathered 148,405 lbs of food and $50,895 for communities across the region. "High-quality water and wastewater infrastruc- ture is an essential part of building livable communi- ties," he said. "Our government's $725,000 investment in Westport will enhance quality of life and make the village a more attrac- tive place to start a family or small business. The province's commit- ment of $725,000 and the federal government's $1.45 million contribution to the community's new wastewater treatment plant will go a long way towards the village's fiscal health. "Today's announce- ment for the village lets us stand up tall again know- ing that there are other things that we will now be able to afford to do while at the same time assuring the stability of the commu- nity," said Mayor Robin Jones. In the last few years houses have been difficult to sell, a point that was noted in a decrease in assessment value in the village during MPAC's last global reassessment. "Most of us the coun- cillors and myself have heard from many, selling a house here has been diffi- cult because the questions that the realtors are asking 'What about the debt?' So this will go a long way to helping the stability of the village and the other things we want to do," said the mayor. MPP Steve Clark heaped praise on the vil- lage for their efforts to see the project through towards completion with the obtaining of the grant. A poorly maintained mechanical wastewater treatment system relying on cold weather to operate twice forced the village to haul effluent to Smiths Falls. $2.175 million provincial-federal grant takes pressure off Westport u sh Get your Don't go viral. eet (613) 273-2922 h Str c 3 Chur .A. estport Village I.D W ca ot. al.ca vir dontgo Mirror The Review Elgin and Westport stops bring in almost $15,000 and over a ton of food Communities come through for food banks Canada Post Contract No. 40021501 Last Friday was a happy day for the Village of Westport and its politicians with the announcement of $1.45 million from the Canadian government and $725,000 from the province for the Wastewater Treatment Plant project.
