22 • A&E JANUARY 2018 Mimaki UJF-3042 MkII The new UJF-3042 MkII is the successor model to the UJF-3042FX/HG. The new UJF MkII Series printers are the next gen- eration models in the UJF Series line. This new model is production focused and offers professional tools built on a small footprint that delivers consistent quality. The UJF MkII Series printers combine high accuracy dot placement with speed improvements of up to 20 percent over the previous gen- eration. The 3042 MkII offers an A3 size printable area with a maximum weight of 11 pounds and height of 6 inches. • Automatic Primer Application dis- tributes primer printable areas, allowing the unprinted areas to remain untouched. This feature retains the natural texture of the substrate. • High-performance flexible and hard surface inks expand the range of applications, allowing a glossy finish, matte effects, textures, and embossed printing with an included library of 129 types of textures. • Laser sensor media detection and automated gap check ensure that the print head is at the optimal height on each print. One-liter bottles have replaced the smaller cartridge system of previous models, making ink delivery more efficient. • Mimaki Advanced Pass System 4 (MAPS4) utilizes an advanced algo- rithm pattern to reduce banding, delivering output that looks great at higher speeds. Combined with Vari- able Dot Technology, the resulting prints are smooth in the mid-tones, solids, and gradients. • Mimaki Circulation Technology (MCT) continuously circulates white ink and reduces the need for manual agitation. • Nozzle Check Unit (NCU) and Nozzle Recovery System (NRS): NCU monitors nozzle outages and automatically activates a series of recovery functions; NRS assigns operational nozzles when an outage is detected, ensuring production is not impacted. The unique advantages of UV-LED printing are extensive: The ability to print on a wide variety of materials, both treated and untreated, including PVC, PET, ABS, acrylic, wood, glass, ceramics, boards, metals, soft fabrics, and leathers. • The ability to print on thick 3-D items. • UV-curable ink sets include CMYK, white, and clear. • Using the white ink as a base, a UV-LED printer has the ability to print white and full-color on dark items and both sides of clear glass and acrylics. • Inks can be built up to create 3-D textures, raised print, and Braille for signs and awards. • Inks dry almost instantaneously on the substrate surface. • Dot gain and color saturation are optimized because there is no time for ink dots to spread. • There is no ink absorption into the actual substrate; the inks firmly bond to the substrate surface. Due to the almost instant drying time, multiple layers of both white and clear plus CMYK may be applied simultaneously and cured in a single printing pass. This allows for fine details and small fonts to be printed. The inks can also be applied selec- tively to build up embossed objects and letters, including custom textures and Braille. In addition, the clear ink can be "flooded" over the entire or selected areas of the substrate to increase durability or provide a higher gloss finish. The level of gloss is dependent on the number of clear layers applied. • UV-LED inks are environmentally friendly. • Finished products are scratch resistant and exhibit good light fastness indoors. • Fast production times are possible. • Fully decorated items can be packed immediately right out of the printer; no additional production steps are required. • Reduced production cost and the wide variety of products that can be digi- tally decorated justify the initial capital expenditure of a UV-LED printer. All UV-LED printers, from entry- level to high-capacity/high-speed, provide these same inherent advan- tages. Print speed, accuracy, resolu- tion, printed product size/weight all must be carefully evaluated to deter- mine what level of printer to lease or purchase. In addition, most users I've spoken with find new uses for their printers after just a few weeks of operation. UV-LED Advantages An example of textured, ADA, Braille sign produced by DCS.
