OFF-ROAD WALK OF FAME HONORS BAJA RACERS The City of Ensenada honors 50-years of off-road racing During The Off-Road Walk Of Fame Ceremony By Dan Sanchez Photos by Jack Wright Over a 50-year history, the SCORE Baja 1000 has many tales to tell of the challenges that faced two and four-wheel competitors. Some of the race’s stories, however, are now told on the Off-Road Walk of Fame in Ensenada. A total of 49 marble tiles line the boardwalk in front of the Rivera Cultural Center. Each one has the names of the two-wheel and four-wheel winners of every Mexican 1000 and SCORE Baja 1000 race by year. The dedication for the Off-Road Walk of Fame was held before the race, on November 14th, when SCORE and Mexican officials gathered to honor the winners past and present and unveiled it to a large audience. Federal and State officials, along with SCORE CEO/President Roger Norman and Grand Marshall Sal Fish, spoke to honor the racers listed on the Off-Road Walk of Fame. “Thank you for accepting SCORE and allowing us to race here [Ensenada],” said Grand Marshall Sal Fish. “The racers present here and now on the ground is what has built SCORE into what it continues to be today.” The Off Road Walk of Fame was unveiled to the public by Bruce Meyers in his restored Meyers Manx. Meyers was the original designer of the car that was one the first four-wheel vehicle that won the 1967 Mexican 1000 race with Vic Wilson and Ted Mangels behind the wheel. “I can’t think of a better way than this to kick off a week of the 50th BFGoodrich Tires SCORE Baja 1000, than by immortalizing the racing that has been happening here for years,” said Roger Norman. Also present in the crowd was Malcolm Smith, who was also one of the winners of the first race, who rode with J.N. Roberts on a Husqvarna bike. Other racers present were Rod Hall who has competed in every Baja 1000 race, and who celebrated his 80th birthday during the pre-race festivities. SJ
