GOLD AND BLACK ILLUSTRATED VOLUME 28, ISSUE 3 25 The dollars that are invested in Power 5 programs these days are clearly significant. At some point, this can't continue infinitely upwards. I would like to think that in five years we would have found a way to say 'enough is enough.' You can only spend so many dollars on a recruiting budget before it seems like you're wasting money. I have invested almost my whole working life into this industry and whenever I get to the end of that, I still want the thing to be going. It does great things for lots of young people and lots of communities, and if it were to come apart because of greed or poor deci- sion-making that would be a bad outcome. I hope as an industry we can restore some sanity." Gold and Black: What is coming down the pike that will guide where this is all going? Bobinski: "The media is evaluating the (broadcast) rights and what the rights deals will look like. That is 5-6 years out for most of the players in this industry, but what will be the delivery method for live sports? Live sports have great value in the market right now. I don't see that changing. "Sports is in the fabric of our country. College sports is getting more popular, and college football is a great game. It has more variability and people want to see what is happening. College basketball, likewise, is a fun and intense game to watch. If that changes, then the landscape changes dramatically because it changes the economics of what we are doing. How these court cases (compensation and employee status issues for athletes) are solved also has a big impact, and they can go lots of different ways. Worst-case scenario, our world could be completely different." j Gold and Black • 2605 Yeager Road • West Lafayette, IN 47906 • 1-800-876-4678 Visit the store at GoldandBlackDigital.com/store for this and other great Purdue Fan items!
