The Review-Mirror January 18, 2018 – 16 A winter thaw last week combined with rain brought spring-freshet-like conditions to some local waterways like at Chaffey's Lock. Two of the four filter beds were up and running last week while hauling of effluent to Smiths Falls got underway. While hauling excess wastewater is limited to keeping ahead of daily inflows, the valves that operate the system auto- matically are expected to be installed late this week or early next week. In the meantime, the two beds are being operat- ed manually. They need to get a third bed online to keep ahead of average daily flows. Each filter bed can handle 125 m3 per day. Daily inflows to the lagoon were at 324 m3. The system was to be up and running November 20. The contract requires Selectra to be responsible for the cost of hauling plus a potential $1,000 per day penalty commencing Nov 21. Westport currently has a 10 per cent holdback on the project, which would total $210,000 based on Selectra's initial bid. The site still needs 18 inches of topsoil plus grass planting.
