A hearing by the Col- lege of Physicians and Surgeons to discipline Dr. Ian Shiozaki has been postponed until March 12 after a previous scheduling in February. The doctor has had restrictions placed on his prescribing of Narcotic drugs, Controlled Drugs and Benzodiazepines and other Targeted Sub- stances. The doctor's pain management programs with his patients lay out- side the norm of what has now been established by the college as standard practice. The college's website states the allegations to the discipline committee are that he engaged in professional misconduct and/or is incompetent in his family practice, and engaged in disgraceful, dishonorable or unpro- fessional conduct by fail- ing to comply with the College's Out of Hospi- tal Premises require- ments. After a Dec. 14 article in The Review Mirror, Dr. Shiozaki has been concerned that some of his own comments may have been misconstrued as being critical of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario or the handling of his matter. He did not make any remarks critical of the College nor were any intended but to avoid any confusion, Dr. Shiozaki has stated that the Col- lege properly intervened with discipline proce- dures respecting some aspects of his practice. These practice issues have been or are being addressed so that all aspects of his practice will be compliant with applicable standards however, it is also appro- priate that the College require a period of sus- pension of his practice license, he said. Dr. Shiozaki states that the College is essen- tial to making the prac- tice of medicine incre- mentally safer and deliv- ering better care and he appreciates the guidance of the College. The length of the sus- pension of his practice will be determined at a hearing on March 12. He has made arrangements for other doctors to cover his practice and care for his patients during the suspension period. Thursday, January 25, 2018 Serving North Leeds and area since 1893 Vol. 127, No. 3 $1incl. tax A public meeting will be held at the Township of Leeds and the Thousand Islands council chambers on Feb. 5 from 5:30 to 7 pm. to discuss a 2018 ref- erendum question. In November council decided to ask 'Are you in favor of the Township of Leeds and the Thousand Islands passing a by-law to change the current ward structure?' on the 2018 municipal election ballot. The meeting on Febru- ary 5 is part of the regula- tory requirements a municipality is to com- plete before the placement of ballot question. The public meeting will be just in time to pass a bylaw at the February 12 council meeting where they could authorize the inclusion of the question before the March 1 dead- line of the election year. A 'double majority' of voters would have to vote in the affirmative for the new council to be obliged to take action on the ques- tion. Fifty per cent of the voters would need to vote and 50 per cent of those voters would have to vote in the affirmative. The ballot question is the result of some interest on council to look at the issue but not enough inter- est to examine the ques- tion during this term of office. At amalgamation beginning January 2001 the township was divided into one seat for the for- mer Escott township, two seats for the former Rear of Leeds and three seats for the Front of Lans- downe.
