Monthly: • Review financials with office manger or controller to check for departmental performance, short- falls or issues related to financial statement. • Monthly manager's meeting with financial review against forecast and goals. • Review inventory levels, stocking and inventory. • Check for stale units and push to have them sold. • Check floorplan levels. • Counsel managers who are below goal. Annually: • Reviews of each employee (should actually be done quarterly by managers). • Full review of advertising plan for coming year. • Full review of insurance and benefits for coming year. (Shop for best deal.) • Require budget and sales forecast from each department head. • Prepare total dealership's budget and sales forecast for coming year. • Review ordering plan for new product for coming year. • Arrange for adequate capitalization and floorplan. Just a Taste … Those items are really just a sample of items that might be on your checklist. The lists above are meant to be thought starters. You should know that O/GMs also have checklists with more detail for their oversight of each profit center. One of the first things on your checklist for the coming year should be to review or revise your checklist. I don't know about you, but I get a real kick from checking items off a list. It gives a sense of accom- plishment in what can be a never-ending set of duties and tasks. The structure is important. So is the consistency. It's like water dripping on a rock shapes and smooths the surface over time. Likewise, the consistent pres- sure of doing the routine things will smooth out and shape the operation of your dealership.
