Manufacturing output decreased 0.7%. • New orders for manufactured goods increased 2.8% in July from June, according to prelimi- nary U.S. Census Bureau figures. Excluding transportation equipment, new orders increased just 0.7%. • Housing starts rose 2.3% in August from July to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 750,000 – the second-highest level since October 2008. Permits dipped 1.0% to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 803,000. 0 N Carrier Sentiment Index rises in August 2009 2010 2011 2012 For-hire trucking companies added 1,400 payroll jobs in August as the overall U.S. economy added 96,000 nonfarm jobs, according to the latest esti- mates from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Payroll employment in trucking was 1.352 million jobs — up 0.1% over July and 3.8% over August 2011. The index assesses the month on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the carrier's worst month and 10 being the best.
