24 THE SHOP MARCH 2018 O verlanding is self-reliant adven- ture travel to remote destina- tions, where the journey is the goal. Not a new phenomenon, the rationale behind adventure travel has nonetheless struck a chord with off-roaders, thrill-seekers and outdoor enthusiasts of all ages. Using mechanized off-highway-capable transport to reach isolated camping spots, overlanding adventures can last for extended periods of time. Often, they cross international boundaries as well. While expeditions are travels to specific locations, overlanding is a journey as the main purpose. It isn't four-wheeling or rock-crawling, where the objective is to seek out and overcome chal- lenging obstacles, and so far there are no trophies or prizes to be had. Gaining awareness and acceptance within the automotive sector may be proof enough that the adventure travel trend is growing—but what does it mean when this same movement is gaining traction among RV manufacturers and the outdoor lifestyle/apparel industry as well? We spoke with manufacturers and shops immersed in adventure travel to get a better understanding of where overlanding is really headed. SERENA PRUETT, OPERATIONS MANAGER SDHQ Offroad THE SHOP: When did SDHQ get interested or involved in building overland vehicles? SP: Overland builds have been an inherent part of our business since our inception. TS: SDHQ has been overlanding for how long, and what prompted you to get involved in this market segment? SP: Builds for employees and the shop specific to this segment started about four years ago. More widely available production items have made it easier for us to get further involved in the overland market. TS: The idea behind overlanding or adven- ture travel is that the journey itself is as important as reaching a certain des- tination. How does this fit in with the vehicles you build for your customers? SP: Our goal with every build is function over form, so our intention is to provide the best ride quality and performance, with required accessories to help them along the way.
