30 THE SHOP MARCH 2018 TS: Due to the nature of adventure travel, there are times when you're definitely off the beaten path. Does this factor into the design and durability of your products? BL: We do a lot of testing from high-speed off-road to low-speed rock-crawling. We even own a German-made high cycle fatigue tester that can simulate years of abuse in a matter of days. All this ensures our products survive anything our customers can throw at them. One consideration that we pay particular attention to is the weight of our products. With all the gear people are carrying these days, it soon overloads the capacity of the vehicle's stock or even upgraded components. Saving weight on the rack allows us to carry a few extra gallons of fuel or water, or pack more food and supplies that would otherwise have been left behind. All this allows you to stay out longer. TS: With all the accouterments neces- sary for overlanding, to what extent do you work with other manufacturers to be able to accommodate their lights, storage boxes, pop-up tents, tools and other items? BL: We work more with our customers and listen to their needs. Our awning brackets and tie-down rings, for instance, were inspired by the needs of our clients. Next time, we'll talk with outdoor com- panies such as Poler Outdoor Stuff, Big Agnes, Danner and Yakima, plus RV stal- warts like Dometic that are embracing adventure travel and see automotive enthusiasts as an untapped market for their products. JASON SAKURAI heads up Roadhouse Marketing, a mar- keting, advertising and sales solutions firm dedicated to the automotive aftermarket. A fre- quent contributor to THE SHOP, Jason's byline appears in many enthusiast and trade publications, in print and online. OVERLANDING The Leitner Designs Active Cargo Systems Toyota Tundra was featured in the WARN Industries booth at the 2017 SEMA Show carrying a wooden kayak, RotopaX gas and water packs, a fire extinguisher, Power Tank air system, back- up lights and a Sunseeker awning on the Leitner Designs rack.
