6 • A&E MARCH 2018 F or someone who is 35 years old, 30 years is a long time. For those of us who are a bit older, 30 years can feel like two blinks of an eye. It amazes me that we are celebrating 30 years with this issue of A&E maga- zine. Do you remember our first year? At the beginning of this wonderful A&E journey, we called it Awards & Engraving Business Magazine. (Try saying that 150 times a day!) Pre-launch, we toyed with the idea of calling it simply Awards Business, but the engraving processes, supplies, equip- ment, and creative techniques blended perfectly with our idea of a complete magazine, so "& Engraving" fit. "Business," of course, is a critical component. Then, in a stroke of simplicity, we shortened it to the "A&E" you now know and love. Through the change, though, we never shortened our dedication to "the business of awards, engraving, and everything personalized." Like your business, A&E doesn't exist without great people, and we've had the privi- lege of working with some good ones. Especially early on, Mike and Bev Wieber made bold, important, and sometimes controversial decisions that put A&E's readers on the path toward complementary crossover opportunities. Sometimes a few people pushed back, but the mission always remained consistent: responsibly introduce smart products and ideas and let the market decide. Time has proven them right. In the mid-'90s, Steve Wieber took the editor's reins, and then Dave Pomeroy took the publisher's reins, and together they carefully guided each issue through A&E's signifi- cant growth to new and impressive milestones. Steve introduced new editorial disciplines, invited fabulous industry experts to write, and established new sections filled with infor- mation and ideas for our growing and hungry audience. Dave pushed for and achieved consistent quality and unmatched client service. No bias here at all: our team set the stan- dard for credibility and excellence in the industry. That standard continues. More than 25 years ago, we stretched the A&E brand into the trade show world, now part of THE NBM SHOW. Then into the digital and eNews world. You chal- lenged us to challenge ourselves, and we responded, determined to champion the idea of steering our part of "small business America" with a collaborative roadmap. Thank you for the push. We will continue to listen, and we will continue to showcase the talented people of the A&E world as we share their stories and their progressive ideas, advice, and techniques. What we consider to be the wisdom of product diversity might not be right for everyone. But bottom line: those who have embraced it have discovered new "everything personalized" profit streams with creative new ways to delight their customer base. For many, we believe it has made a significant difference between business success and busi- ness autopsy. Every business needs to define "elasticity" for itself. For those who have stretched themselves to affirm that our work means something special, thank you for choosing us. And for all of those who have poured their energy and passion into the making of A&E over the past 30 years, THANK YOU.
