Held on the frozen Rideau, a track would be cleared for the event. A newspaper article from February 1874 stated, "Trotting races for $200 will take place at Westport on Tuesday and Wednesday, 3rd and 4th of March. A large attendance both of racers and sporting gents is expected." With a purse of $200, it is no wonder the races were well-attended… according to infla- tion rates, that would be the equivalent of over $4,100 today!
