46 ISSUE 106 / 2018 INDIE Making indie for the masses - introducing Nick Mulvey. On the 20th February, Swedish singer Emil Svanängen (aka Loney Dear) will perform his final night of his UK and Ireland tour at the Omeara. The 33-year-old musician from Cambridge is something akin to a refreshed and uplifted Ben Howard. Reinventing himself in 2011 after leaving British instrumental group Portico Quartet, Mulvey went solo to channel his talent as a guitarist and singer/ songwriter. Despite his work under Portico Quartet being quoted by modern indie legends Alt-J and two Mercury Prize nominations under his belt, the singer has stayed relatively under the radar. Mulvey's first album First Mind was released in 2014, followed by his second album Wake Up Now, released in December 2017, both receiving critical acclaim. Having studied music and art in Havana, Cuba, the Caribbean, his African influences in his music are easy to hear, giving his sound a vibrant twist. Mulvey is the ultimate master in creating feel-good and easy listening music. This is to promote his seventh, self-titled studio album, which has already received a good deal of positive feedback since its release in 2017. In it, he continues his style of blending his gentle yet expressive voice with a combination of instrumental and electronic sounds. It has been several years since Loney Dear released an album, and in his latest production, the development of this masterful musical control can be heard in tracks like 'Hulls' and 'Sum'. The enigmatic aura of Loney Dear's music style is well worth seeing live in February, you won't leave disappointed.
