A look into the highlights for the 2018 season of the SCORE World Desert Championship By Dan Sanchez Over the last five years, SCORE International has undergone numerous changes that have made improvements in overall safety and its ability to reach a larger worldwide audience for each of its racing events. For the 2018 SCORE World Desert Challenge SCORE International is poised to reach higher goals and expects this season to be even better for both racers and fans. 32nd SCORE San Felipe 250 Starting with the first race of the 2018 season the SCORE San Felipe 250, the race’s start and finish line will once again be on the city’s Malecon. According to SCORE race officials, the starting line on the Malecon during the 31st SCORE San Felipe 250 in 2017, helped make the race one of the best in the history of the city. Fans commented on how beautiful and exciting the race was from this vantage point of the Sea of Cortez, and the easy access to ocean shops, restaurants and top hotels in the city. For the 32nd running of the race, SCORE announced the course will be 320-miles of new trails that have never been raced before. One of the most important aspects of this race is that it will be the qualifier for the 50th BFGoodrich Tires SCORE Baja 500. SCORE officials point out that every class finish will qualify, so how racers finish in the SCORE San Felipe 250, is how they will start at the 50th BFGoodrich Tires SCORE Baja 500. The SCORE San Felipe 250 is scheduled from April 5th through the 8th and will be a single loop race. 50th BFGoodrich Tires SCORE Baja 500 For the 2018 season, the 50th BFGoodrich Tires SCORE Baja 500 will be celebrating a milestone anniversary, and according to SCORE race officials, the race course will reflect its historical nature. Officials made sure that this race will be a true 500-miles on dirt, and whatever extra mileage is on the pavement will be added on to the overall race. “Racers will see the Pacific, the Sea of Cortez, mountains, desert, and new roads that people have never seen before,” says SCORE CEO/President Roger Norman. “Every race, we’re trying to mix it up a little bit, and this race will be different from any other Baja 500 that’s ever been run.” The 50th BFGoodrich Tires SCORE Baja 500 is scheduled for May 30th through June 3rd in Ensenada, Baja California Mexico. 22nd SCORE Tijuana Desert Challenge Tijuana will once again be the venue for the 22nd SCORE Desert Challenge. The race will continue in its format of multiple sessions for each class, but this year, SCORE officials made the event two days and with a longer course. According to race officials, SCORE is also looking on having a Jump Contest that could be held on the riverbed in downtown Tijuana. Their plan is for the area to support 100,000 fans on both sides of the riverbed for best viewing. While this idea is still in the planning stages, more information will be released as the race approaches. It is scheduled for September 19th through the 23rd. Similar to the SCORE San Felipe 250, the 22nd SCORE Tijuana Desert Challenge will be a qualifier for all race classes except the Trophy Trucks, for the 51st SCORE Baja 1000 race in November. 51st SCORE Baja 1000 For the 2018 SCORE World Desert Championship season, the 51st SCORE Baja 1000 will once again be a traditional loop race starting and finishing in Ensenada. Race officials made the course route to be approximately 800-plus miles, and incorporate some new sections of the race that racers haven’t seen in about 35 years. SCORE Trophy Trucks will qualify for the SCORE Baja 1000 during the SEMA Show in Las Vegas, Nevada, October 30th held at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. All other race classes will start from their finish positions from the Tijuana Desert Challenge. The course will be a loop race, starting and ending in Ensenada and, according to race officials, will include some new sections and a new way of getting from the Pacific Ocean to the Sea of Cortez. The race is scheduled from November 14th through the 18th. 2018 Season New Changes Motorcycles & Quads: To help safety and prevent teams from changing engines during a race, SCORE is implementing these new changes to take place during the 2018 season. New frame and engine tagging for motorcycle and quads Double redundancy data logging for motorcycles and quads Four-Wheel Class Additions: Class 7 addition pending requests. According to SCORE race officials, many racers are wanting to compete in older Class 7 vehicles. SCORE has announced it will add the class if there is enough requests for entries into this category. For more information, visit the SCORE Racer Section on the SCORE International website. Better Border Crossing Experience: SCORE has announced procedures for teams to cross the border from the United States into Mexico. For the 2018 season, SCORE has the ability to be in contact with border agents, giving SCORE the ability to assist with any issues, taxes, etc. by simply contacting SCORE immediately.
