GOLD AND BLACK ILLUSTRATED VOLUME 28, ISSUE 4 69 Drew Brees Drew Brees is set to become a free agent on March 14, unless he and the Saints can work on a deal that will keep him in New Orleans, perhaps 'til his retirement. Brees, 39, and management are looking to do just that, agree- ing that they'll work on a short-term deal during the NFL Combine from late February to early March in Indianapolis. Brees, who signed a one-year $24.25-million extension before last season, will be an $18-milion cap hit for the Saints in 2018, regardless if he's on the team or not. So there's incentive for New Orleans to get a deal done. A deal in the low-to-mid 20s, in millions of dollars, could be possible, a relative bargain for the future NFL Hall of Famer. Eddy Wilson Eddy Wilson might be Purdue's best shot at keeping its draft streak — it's currently at 20 consecutive years with at least one player selected into the NFL — alive, after the defensive tackle left a year early. That's particularly true after Wilson was invited to the NFL Draft Combine, giving him an opportunity to get in front of scouts from all 32 teams. "Every opportunity I get, I want to take advantage of," he said in February, after receiving the invite. "I'm not really thinking, 'Oh, I have to get to the Combine. I have to do this.'
