GOLD AND BLACK ILLUSTRATED VOLUME 28, ISSUE 4 74 from a long career in human resources, finishing it as director of employee engagement for Cummins in Co- lumbus, Ind. He enjoys his days living close to his two sons and two grandchildren. Youngest son Trent, 33, is an accomplished three- sport athlete in his own right who lives in the Indy area. Austin, 36, was a point guard for Gene Keady from 2001- 04 and ranks second in Purdue annals in assist-to-turn- over ratio (since 1985). He has been a successful wom- en's basketball coach for IUPUI for eight seasons. "Both of my boys have been great, and I really have enjoyed watching a lot of women's hoops with Austin," said Parkinson, who also makes his way to Mackey for games when there is no conflict with the Jaguars' schedule. "It is great for me to have the opportunity to still be around basketball." Steele, never short on opinion, is pretty emphatic on where Parkinson's place in Purdue hoops history belongs. A long-time college coach at different levels, Steele has kept a close eye on Purdue hoops. In his humble opinion, the program has never had a better true point guard since. "There have been some really good ones, as Everette Stephens and Tony Jones come to mind, but Bruce was the best in the way he ran a basketball team," Steele said. "Sure, he was a brilliant passer, but he had an overall feel for the game like no other. When you com- bine it with his toughness and will to win, you have one great player. "It's pretty amazing that he is not in the Purdue Hall of Fame. ... He was the best player of that era at Purdue and we were darn successful and had lots of great play- ers. Park was the best player in every practice and in every game. "He was the best player, period." j PURDUE LEATHER COLLECTION Gold and Black • 2605 Yeager Road • West Lafayette, IN 47906 • 1-800-876-4678 Visit the store at GoldandBlackDigital.com for this and other great Purdue Fan items!
