The Westport and Rideau Lakes Chamber of Commerce is looking for support from volunteers to staff their welcome centre and from businesses to renew or join their mem- bership. "Our membership renewal process is current- ly underway with nearly 50 per cent of our past members already having renewed and the rest hav- ing just received a reminder to do so. Members support the local business community, are listed in the chamber's business directory, enjoy discounts as part of the provincial organization and get a discount for an advertisement in the Rideau Valley Guide. This year the Chamber is regrouping under new leadership with the appointment of Westport Village Pharmacy owner Tracey Phillips as presi- dent after the resignation of past president John Pringle in January. "Although John has resigned from the Board, he remains very involved in the Chamber and con- tinues to support us both with his membership as well as his dedication of time to organizing our var- ious events," said Phillips. Membership committee members are Elaine Frei- day, Freedom 55 Financial in Rideau Lakes; Joan Barrett, Bear Mountain Boats, and Phillips. The Chamber, while sometimes struggling to retain its membership numbers has always made a success of the operation of the Welcome Centre on Spring Street where it sup- ports visitors to the area during their stay and pro- motes local businesses. Volunteers are an inte- gral part of the centre's success and are essential to keeping the centre open on a part time basis during the shoulder seasons of spring and fall. Real estate agent and chamber volunteer Chris- tine Jennings is the new visitor centre's new coor- dinator after many years of service from Carmel McCartney. To learn more about the chamber's volunteer opportunities contact Christine Jennings at 613 453-7063. Information on cham- ber membership is avail- able on their website at www.therideaucalls.ca.
