Did you threaten another coun- cilor?" asked Baptista. "Councillor Huff, did he just threaten you?" said the mayor. "He turned to me and said you interrupt me like that and I'll have your butt. An interesting choice of word," said Huff. Baptista told Jackson to refrain from threatening other members in the council chamber and that under the procedural bylaw, if he didn't main- tain proper decorum, he could ask him to leave. In an interview with The Review-Mirror on Tuesday the mayor noted the kind of behavior that was witnessed on Monday night wouldn't be tolerat- ed and he was considering how to deal with the mat- ter. "Obviously we should- n't be bullied harassed or intimidated in the work- place. No one should be subjected to verbal abuse in the workplace. We do take this very seriously," said Baptista. "If the individual per- ceives it as a threat it is a threat," said the mayor who noted there is an obligation on the munici- pality's part to do the 'right thing' despite the cost. "The reality is if there continues to be breaches of the code of conduct we have to take each of those seriously. There are so many incidents now and every incident that requires investigation costs a significant amount of money," he said United Counties Coun- cil made a first passage through the counties' capi- tal budget on Tuesday and will be passing budget at their council meeting later this month which includes projects in North Leeds. Capital projects for Rideau Lakes area include $700,000 for restoration of the Cty. Rd. 10 bridge in Westport, $1.5 million for the Elgin Main Street reconstruction, $50,000 for detail design work for the Newboro bridge and $50,000 for a study of Cty. Rd. 10 along West- port Mountain. An attempt to stabilize the slope with gabion bas- kets was made with an in- house project more than a decade ago. "The condition of the road has been failing. It appears that the existing gabion baskets seem to be failing," said counties engineer Dadean Assam. Plans for the Westport bridge are to go through a public consultation before construction begins. Last summer, some community members met with the mayor and raised their concerns about the bridge after they saw crews doing some prelimi- nary testing of the site. The United Counties said in January there would be no sidewalk. "I followed that up with a discussion with the UCLG Director of Public Works and shared with him their concerns and in particular that the Village and the public want some input, through consulta- tion, should the rehabilita- tion proceed," wrote Mayor Jones. Projects in the Town- ship of Leeds and the Thousand Islands include $26,000 in design work for repairs to Lyndhurst's stone bridge and $25,000 for design work to remedi- ate Cty. Road 3 in the hol- low west of Long Point Road. There will be $100,000 spread over two years for design, engineering and construction of a solution to the Cty. Rd. 3 and Cty. Rd. 34 intersection at the top of the hill in Lans- downe. The Southern Patrol station on Cty. Rd. 3 will be getting $45,000 in repairs including new lighting and a new genera- tor. The counties capital budget includes $5.9 mil- lion for roads, $2.9 million for bridges, and $9.6 for buildings and $1.4 million for equipment. Tough job: The judges at Rideau Vista Public School's annual chili-fest had a chal- lenge on Saturday to decide on winners of multiple categories. The top prize 'Best Chili in Town' went to the Opinicon's chili made with smoked brisket and beer. (r-l) Louise Cooper, Moira Vanderwerf, Francois Scheuermann and Colin Khan. Mabee, who came in fourth in the 2014 election in a contest for three seats, was asked to join council after a Ward 1 seat became vacant after the death of Harold Emmons in November. Monday was also the day Mabee learned his name had been cleared after an investigation was undertaken by Scouts Canada after an allegation by a female scout leader which was submitted in November. Mabee is now free to return to scouting activi- ties. He has been a scout leader in Gananoque for over 30 years and serves as the municipality's town crier. A South Frontenac man will be serving 90 days of intermittent jail on week- ends after he was convict- ed of breaking into three cottages on Bob's Lake's Green Bay Road in Janu- ary 2016. We was also convicted of possession of a stolen licence plate and violating an undertaking in May 2016 for failing to notify police of a change of address. Frontenac OPP were contacted by one of the cottage owners, who had surveillance video of a break-in at her property. Officers found two addi- tional burglarized cot- tages. Jessie L. Teal, 30, was arrested and charged in February. In May police spotted a stolen licence plate on a Honda motorcy- cle at a service station in Verona. Teal and a female partner abandoned the bike when officers approached.
