Elgin restaurant owner Tamas Brummer started the group in January and has gotten 73 members in the six weeks the group has been online. The group features notices of special events as well as postings by local businesses. "The group's aims are to create a voice for busi- ness owners in the Town- ship and to exchange information and advice in helping businesses to prosper in the Township, to present advice to Council if necessary to lobby for any change in Planning, Variances, By- laws that aid local busi- nesses." wrote Brummer who is looking forward to having businesses come out of the wood- work. "You can't really know what's around. Some don't advertise. Some aren't that big. Some are cottage indus- tries. It would be nice to get to know them all," said Brummer who will be hosting the March 22nd gathering at his business on Elgin's Main Street, Sweet and Savoury. He's also encouraging local organizations to participate to have the opportunity to network with the larger communi- ty at the March 22nd 5:30 p.m. gathering. The Horton family and the Township Leeds and the Thousand Islands hosted the Lanark & District Maple Syrup Producers Association's annual Tapping Out Party Saturday Mayor Joe Baptista and MPP Steve Clark got the honor of making the event's ceremonial tap. Township of Leeds and the Thousand Islands has agreed to a new Recre- ation Cost Sharing with the Town of Gananoque for the Lou Jeffries Com- munity Centre Arena. The agreement is set to be ratified at next week's council meeting. Gananoque's council was presented with the agreement at their Tuesday night council meeting. The new cost sharing agreement includes a por- tion covering capital upgrades for the facility. An agreement for shar- ing operating expenses, created in 2011, had a pay- ment cap of $85,000 for the township, an amount they paid last fall. The operating shortfall faced by Gananoque for 2016, even after the $85,000 contribution, was $25,168. The shortfall and the cap became a stumbling block for the township and the town to enter into a memorandum of under- standing to hire a consul- tant to jointly create a Master Recreation Plan. The new arena agree- ment includes a 2018 levy of $90,828 for operations and $21,992 for capital spending, for a total of $112,820. The schedule of payments rises to $95,213 for operating and $44,907 for capital by 2021, for a total of $140,030. The numbers were based on a usage by the township, with 49 per cent of the 662 users registered with the Gananoque minor hockey, Gananoque girls minor hockey, the men's hockey league, the Gananoque figure skating club and the senior exer- cise class. The town's participa- tion was 38 per cent, with 13 per cent from other municipalities making up the rest. "You will not get a skating facility for $112,000," said Council- lor Vicki Leakey. "Two hundred and fifty-five people is not enough to operate any rink by itself. We need to work together on this," she said of the number of township participants using the ice. Mayor Joe Baptista noted that the capital costs the township would be responsible for would not include the amount Gananoque is responsible for in its asset manage- ment plan for the cost to replace the facility. "All this capital is for replacing components inside the facility," he said. The 2018 cost is approximately $11 per res- ident going to $14 in 2021. TTLI and Gananoque reach new arena deal that removes $85,000 cap New Rideau Lakes Township business group to meet after growing to 73 members online since January The Review-Mirror March 8, 2018 – 5 Collision closes Hwy. 15 Monday The Delta Mill Society and Rideau Lakes Public Library are looking for donations of books for the groups' annual giant book sale at the Old Town Hall on Saturday and Sunday, April 21 and 22. The book sale, which covers more than half of the hall and creeps up onto the stage, is a favourite stop for many visitors to the Delta Maple Syrup Festival. Sales from the event are split between the soci- ety and the library which is accepting donations for the sale at their branches. A drop off at the hall can also be arranged by contacting the sale's coor- dinator Moel Benoit at 928-2902. The sale operates on an honour system with buy- ers offering a donation instead of paying a fixed price per book. "Now that we do it by donation it seems to attract more people. Peo- ple tend to give more. It certainly makes it a whole lot easier to run. People just hand over their money," said Benoit. Mill Society seeking donations for book sale Tamas Brummer, right, with Ilona Deicsics is hoping to further develop a township business association.
