6 | SEPTEMBER 2017 nshoremag.com Biting into a crisp just-picked apple, walking through a sea of vibrant red and orange leaves, the aroma of freshly baked cinnamon donuts at the farm, sitting in the stands on a Friday night to watch your favorite team score a touchdown, passing yellow school buses brimming with happy children reunited with friends, donning the first wool sweater of the season for those cool days and chilly nights. The sun sinks a bit lower in the sky, cast- ing long shadows as we leave summer behind. Autumn awakens all the senses and offers the simplest of pleasures. In this issue, we celebrate all things autumn—from the region's prestig- ious private schools to the best leaf-peeping drives to a great new place for barbecue for your tailgate party. We also visit the public realm of Andover's Phillips Academy. In addition to being one of the top private schools in the nation, Phillips Academy offers the pub- lic a variety of places to explore on campus, such as the Addison Gallery of American Art and Moncrieff Cochran Sanctuary— perfect for a run or a long walk. We return to Penguin Hall, a recently opened all-girls pre- paratory school located in a his- torical 1920s manse on 50 acres in Wenham. Just one year old, this school is already raising the bar in interdisciplinary learn- ing—the school is doing things differently and succeeding. We also visit Montserrat Col- lege of Art, another trailblazer in the world of education, which began as a rogressie arts school in , and as our author writes, it s creatie fire still burns. At the helm is college president Stephen Immerman, who makes sure the curriculum not only teaches watercolor painting and sculpting techniques but also hones 21st-century skills for high-tech design in the digital age. We also head north to explore some of the best byways for spectacular leaf peeping, from New Hampshire's Kancamagus Highway to Vermont's Coolidge Scenic Drive to Maine's Old Canada Road Scenic Byway. We hope you enjoy all things autumn in this September issue. editor's letter contributors photograph by Jon Bilous/Shutterstock (left) Robert Boyd, a long time contributor, grew up on the North Shore in Rowley and now lives in southern New Hampshire with his wife and three children.
