3 DENVER CATHOLIC | MARCH 24-APRIL 13, 2018 F ather Dennis Ryan, a priest who served in the Archdiocese of Denver for over 50 years, died March 4. He was 79 years old. Dennis Ryan was born in Hutchin- son, Kansas, on Sept. 29, 1939, to par- ents Ted and Alice Ryan. He was one of five children. He was raised there in Hutchinson, graduated from St. Teresa High School, and went on to attend St. John's University in Collegeville, Minn., where he earned a Bachelor's of Arts in 1962. He studied for the priesthood at Kenrick Seminary in St. Louis, Mo., and was ordained a priest on March 26, 1966, in Wichita, Kansas, by Bishop Leo C. Byrne. He served at various parishes in Kansas, including a stint as pastor of St. Martin Parish in Caldwell, before being incardinated into the Archdio- cese of Denver in 1985. While in Denver, Father Ryan served principally at Nativity of Our Lord Parish in Broomfield, where he was pastor for 12 years. Additionally, he served as pastor of St. Joseph Parish in Fort Collins and Our Lady of the Lakes in Red Feather Lakes. In addition to his priestly ministry, Father Ryan also spent 37 of his 51 years of priesthood as a religion teacher at various Catholic schools, both in Denver and the U.S. Father Ryan celebrated his 50th anniversary as a priest in 2016. Speaking with the§Denver Catholic,he expressed gratitude for his time as a priest and revealed that the secret to his longevity was "the Eucharist, and, by the grace of God, Mary tugging on [the Lord's] sleeve and pointing to me asking him to watch over this young, middle-aged and now elderly priest! "The road hasn't always been easy," he said, "but it has been fun watching them lead through the years!"
