Three-term Brockville Mayor David Henderson was nominated last Thurs- day as the Ontario Liberal Party candidate for Leeds– G r e n v i l l e – T h o u s a n d Island–Rideau Lakes. He will go up against incumbent Progressive Conservative MP Steve Clark who was first elect- ed to the post in 2011 after taking over the job from long-time MPP Bob Runciman. The provincial election is set for June 7. "I'm honoured to be joining Premier Kathleen Wynne's team," said Hen- derson, also a local busi- ness owner. "I'm running because I strongly believe in the plan for fairness with a $15-an-hour minimum wage, free tuition for near- ly a quarter of a million students and free prescrip- tion medication for all children and youth." "The Conservatives have turned their backs on protecting our planet and blown a $16-billion hole in their budget. A promi- nent economist has esti- mated this would mean billions in cuts and would risk 40,000 public-sector jobs like teachers, nurses and firefighters. I'm run- ning in this election because there is a stark choice between continuing to invest in care for our residents or going back- wards with a Conserva- tive agenda for cuts," By Margaret Brand The Review-Mirror An accounting of expenses related to West- port's new wastewater treatment system is at $2,558,687, in a March report from treasurer Anne-Marie Koiner, with some expenses still out- standing. The original cost of the $3 million project began rising last fall when the village was forced to buy additional sand to achieve the necessary volume to complete the project, a large subsurface sewage disposal system (LSSDS). The sand is used to fil- ter the waste which settles in the lagoons before the liquid effluent is pumped into underground distribu- tion tanks from which it is distributed through the sand-lined filter beds. The sand, which was purchased to build the wastewater treatment plant's new large subsur- face sewage disposal sys- tem (LSSDS) did not pro- duced a volume of sand to provides adequate percola- tion of liquids. The additional sand is expected to add $750,000 to the cost of the project which has also incurred extra costs for project management while the project remains prolonged. The plant was to be substantially operational by the end of November, a deadline the contractor did not meet. It appears that the municipality may be investigating or pursuing legal action to be able to recover some of those costs. Monday's Committee of the Whole started with a closed session when all of council had a consultation with their lawyer, Tony Fleming. Mayor Robin Jones' report from the closed ses- sion revealed nothing of what had been under dis- cussion. The village has been By Margaret Brand The Review-Mirror Residents shouldn't expect to find any pay parking in Westport during the current term of coun- cil. At Monday's Commit- tee of the Whole Mayor Robin Jones acknowl- edged that she'd heard it loud and clear from busi- ness owners that pay park- ing was not the direction they wanted for the vil- lage. The issue was dis- cussed at the Feb. 28 Mayor's Breakfast which brought business owners and councilors together. "I think I heard a very loud response from the business people that they are not supportive of us charging people to park downtown and I think I heard just as loud a response from the busi- ness people to enforce the parking bylaws that we currently have," said the mayor. Business owners should expect to get a let- ter from the village clerk in the next month letting them know that parking enforcement has started. Jones said that at the February meeting the most common complaint was from business owners who noted that some employ- ees took spots in front of Thursday, March 22, 2018 Serving North Leeds and area since 1893 Vol. 127, No. 11 $1 incl. tax 75 units from 6'x6' to 12'x36' Easy year round access right in Westport 75 units from 6'x6' to 12'x36' Easy year round access right in Westport 75 units from 6'x6' to 12'x36' Easy year round access right in Westport 75 units from 6'x6' to 12'x36' Easy year round access right in Westport Soho's Self Storage Soho's Self Storage Soho's Self Storage Soho's Self Storage Soho's Self Storage 75 units from 6'x6' to 12'x36' Easy year round access right in Westport 43 Bedford St., Westport 613-273-8848 soho@rideau.net Mirror The Review Village looking at options to recover cost wastewater cost overruns Council affirms business owners rejection of pay parking Maybe St. Patrick's Day should always be on a Saturday.
