20 ISSUE 107 / 2018 FILM Born in 1936, Madikizela was married to Nelson Mandela from 1958-1996, and throughout that time her husband went from being an imprisoned anti-apartheid revolutionary to being the first President of South Africa. Although her husband was famously a supporter of pacifism, Winnie was known for not being opposed to violence if she felt that it served a purpose and even appeared to condone the brutal practice of necklacing in a 1986 speech, despite this, she would later become the face of the African National Congress. The purpose of Lamche's documentary is to shine a light on the life and character of Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, as she is often seen as being a misunderstood and misrepresented figure in the mainstream media. The film was nominated for the 'In Spirit for Freedom Award' at the Jerusalem Film Festival and was also screened at Sundance, so it is definitely worth catching on the big screen. WINNIE MANDELA GETS HER DUES IN NEW DOCUMENTARY Opening in limited release across the UK, director Pascale Lamche's documentary Winnie chronicles the eventful life of South African First Lady Winnie Madikizela-Mandela.
