GUESTLIST 2018 / ISSUE 107 11 Canada's figure skater Eric Radford became the first voluntarily, openly gay athlete to win gold at a Winter Games. Soon after collecting his medal he posted a picture alongside Adam Rippon, a gay US figure skater who has become the darling of social media, whilst also engaging in a feud with US Vice President Mike Pence; it has endeared him to many across the world. The post will be one of the enduring images of the games, perhaps only surpassed by US freestyle skier Gus Kenworthy sharing a snog with his boyfriend after a ski run. Kenworthy announced the tone these Games were going to take when he shared his arrival in South Korea by posting an image of Rippon and himself with the message, "We're here. We're queer. Get used to it." To understand the importance of the LGBT athletes in Pyeongchang we need only look at the man sent to represent the US government at the Games, Mike Pence. Pence has found himself in the bizarre situation of supporting athletes with a sexuality he – at best – struggles to understand. The US sent a man who once endorsed conversion therapy, designed to 'correct' the gay in people and make them straight. Pence denies this, even though it's actually written in his campaign statement from 2000 when he was campaigning for Congress in the US. The cultural importance of the LGBT successes on and off the slopes/rink at Pyeongchang cannot be understated. Their success is an affront to Pence's world, and the shackles of stigma can be loosened, and one day eradicated, thanks in part to their representation of their sexuality at this year's LGBT Games. THE PYEONGCHANG WINTER OLYMPIC GAMES, AKA THE LGBT GAMES Amidst the drama and action on the slopes and the rink, this year's winter Olympic Games, taking place in Pyeongchang, South Korea, may well be best remembered as the games that LGBT athletes won. Why make more washing up for yourself when the eggs you end up with have a boring consistency and flat taste? Just crack your eggs straight into a hot buttered pan, add seasoning and grated cheese (no milk), wait for the whites to solidify a little and then break it all up with a wooden spoon. This makes the consistency varied, gives you something to chew on and makes eggs that are way more delicious. You're welcome. THE SECRET TO TRULY DELICIOUS SCRAMBLED EGGS So what would be the perfect day for you? Write down a list of things, small or big that if you could do every day would make your day wonderful. It could be as simple as taking 10 minutes to meditate every day, reading for 20 minutes, enjoying a great cup of coffee or something bigger like making sure you learn something new every day or coming up with a new business idea. Write down everything you can think of and try to give each an allocated time. Now is the time to work out what you can realistically add into every day. Make this your new priority. Everything else add into a weekly or monthly list. The perfect life starts with the perfect day. If you're enjoying every day, you're well on your way to bliss. PLAN YOUR PERFECT DAY, PLAN YOUR PERFECT LIFE We hear a lot about planning the perfect life but that can seem like a mammoth task. Break it down into something smaller and suddenly it doesn't seem that unachievable. THAT'S RIGHT, WORK HARDER You want to improve your live you should do 99% of what you need to do. In order to step up your position you need to step up the amount of work you need to do. One common trait amongst successful people is they are not afraid of hard work and neither should you be. It may be working harder at getting up in the morning, it might be working harder at being a good friend and if you are just working on building something new the answer is to work harder. CAT RACE If you've been using the old bowl-and-fork method to make scrambled eggs, this is for you. All those already-initiated, smile smugly and move on.
