Other chambers offer none of these and are hard pressed to defend their annual membership fees. But, if you could recover the expense of one year's membership dues with the profit potential of just one new account, I would say that's a good deal. Before joining a business or civic associ- ation, or renewing a current membership, grab a piece of paper and pen and list all possible candidates. Here's a bullet list of general categories to ponder: • Hometown business associations • Fraternal or civic organizations (e.g. Kiwanis, Lions, Masons, et al.) • Sales leads groups (e.g. PowerCore, BNI) • Small-business development centers Check out what their attendance re- quirements are. Some will insist you be present and actively participate in a mini- mum number of meetings each month or risk losing your membership privileges. Find out how many of your competi- tors are current and active members be- fore joining an organization. If you can be promised exclusivity in that no similar businesses will be allowed to join, that could be lucrative for you. Be sure to thor- oughly review an organization's directory of members and figure out what percent- age of its membership qualify as good prospects for you, assuming you covet business-to-business opportunities.
