First, you have to jettison the notion that somehow becoming "green" is going to cost you mon- ey. On the contrary, it can add to your bottom line. BRING YOUR TEAM TOGETHER Ideally, your team is comprised of people from different departments on your staff that have an interest in doing something better. You'll need the owners and key managers' sup- port. It is also a good idea to get some- one from accounting or that someone knows how to build a decent spreadsheet on board. The goal of this group when you get started is to discover your "why." Why is your company building a sustainability program? Is it because your customers are de- manding it? Is it something you are interested in naturally? Maybe other forces are impacting your business and it seems like a good idea? Your committee's first objective is to map out what you want to do with your program. What type of low- hanging fruit can you pick to grab some easy wins? For ex- ample, switching your lighting to LEDs or installing motion sensors in the non-essential rooms.
