AACREDITUNION.ORG | 9 2 Corral photos. With digital images on your tablet, smartphone and SD cards, keeping track of snapshots can seem like a part-time job. Apps such as iCloud, Google Photos, Drop- box and its Carousel can help back up and track your photo library. Download SD card images regularly and create a central folder that gets backed up or stored in the cloud. 3 Secure your I.D. The 2017 Identity Fraud Survey from Javelin Strategy & Research shows I.D. theft struck a record high 15.4 million American victims in 2016, with an incidence rate increase of 16 percent. Yikes. To protect your fi nancial information, Javelin rec- ommends that you: • Review privacy settings on social media sites. • Enable two-factor authentication if possible on shopping sites and use strong passwords. • Sign up for account alerts. Take advantage of the safety measures fi nancial institu- tions offer and respond swiftly to suspicious charges. 4 Recycle old gadgets. Keep old comput- ers and smartphones out of the landfi ll to keep their toxic innards from seeping into the ground. It also saves you from old fi les and data falling into sinister hands. Check into local recycling programs sponsored by tech stores or your city government. 5 Check email origins. Don't click on a link or open an attachment that seems suspi- cious. Unsolicited emails with links (or those from a familiar friend but with an odd return address) are likely scams that can plant mal- ware or spyware on your computer. Also, don't share your personal information unless you are on a familiar secure page. Look for "https" in the web address. 6 Limit screen time. We preach it to kids, but adults get addicted to their devices, too. One British survey showed almost 60 per- cent of internet surfers admit they're addicted, and others reported checking smartphones 200 times a day. So, take a break. Detox from your devices. And, if nothing else, resolve to put away devices when you drive. No text or song down- load is worth distracted driving.
