22 | SPRING 2018 rand boulevards. Magnifi cent architecture. Chic riverside hotels. An iconic opera house. Famous public spas. And friendly locals. Buda- pest offers visitors rich history and culture on two sides of the River Danube. If there's a more captivating pair of historic Central European riverside towns fused into one fabled city that will lead lucky visitors in as many wonderful directions, we don't know about it. The greatest challenge in Budapest is fi tting all that this singular city has to offer into one visit. The good news: You'll have a great time trying. Here are several steps in the right direction. TRAIL OF TWO CITIES Before merging into a single Danube-divvied town in 1873 (as a dual capital of the newly formed Austro-Hungarian Empire), Buda and Pest were two very different places — and still are. PEST: Most of the urbanite action happens on the bustling east bank of the river — home to grand, commercial thoroughfares like Andrássy út and Váci Street, café- and sculpture-lined pedestrian pockets named after beloved local composers like Franz Lizst Square, revived pub-hopping neighborhoods, leafy city parks and a modern, yet classic, hotel-lined riverfront along the Danube Promenade. Pest is where to browse for every Hungarian spice, delicacy and tchotchke in Great Mar- ket Hall, check off must-sees like the Hungar- ian National Museum and House of Terror museum/memorial, ogle at edifi ces like the neo- Gothic Hungarian Parliament, Dohány Street Synagogue (also known as Great Synagogue) and Hungarian State Opera House, and melt away stress in the city's most popular bathhouse (more later). BUDA: On the loftier west bank, Buda's stately hills, tranquility and lingering imperial-ish air distinguish it from its other half across the river. A quick funicular ride whizzes guests up to the bulk of visitor attractions on Castle Hill, G St. Stephen monument, the fi rst king of Hungary, located at the famous Fisherman's Bastion
