Adrianna's Army is bringing awareness to the importance of organ dona- tion at a presentation and free luncheon Sat., April 14 at 3:30 p.m.. Adrianna's Army are supporters of Adrianna Foster, a 20-year old stu- dent who is awaiting a heart transplant and is held dear in the heart of many around the Westport area as a friend, niece, cousin and is a granddaughter of Barb and Maurice Hutch- ings. Theresa Whalen-Wit- jes, a liver transplant recipient and the vice- president of the Transplant Advocacy Association will be making a presenta- tion at the event which will be held at the New- boro United Church. The mission Transplant Advocate Association pro- vides support, knowledge and encouragement to those touched by organ and tissue transplantation and does its part to inform the public about the need and benefits to others of organ and tissue donation. The event is intended to bring awareness to the importance of organ dona- tion during April, Organ Donation month. The Transplant Advo- cate Association (TAA) is challenging the City of Kingston to be the top ranked city over 100,000 in Ontario for organ dona- tion registration" through Service Ontario at bead- onor.ca. Kingston ranks number three, at 46 per cent behind Sudbury, at 53 per cent; and Barrie, at 49 per cent, of health card hold- ers registered. Residents can register their organ donation con- sent online at beadonor.ca/taa_canada. Transplant recipients bringing organ donation awareness to Newboro event The United Counties of Leeds Grenville (UCLG) will be proceed- ing with an initiative to study a counties-wide fire service with a meet- ing of CAOs from its 10 municipalities. UCLG CAO Andy Brown presented a strate- gy for a study to county council on Tuesday to begin with a meeting of the administrators to pro- vide input into a scope of work and Request for Proposal for a study. A facilitator will be hired by the counties to lead the discussion at the meeting. The initiative was at the suggestion of Rideau Lakes Mayor Ron Hol- man who brought a notice of motion to the council where he got sup- port for investigating the potential benefits of a joint venture. Holman is concerned municipalities could be facing costs which could be reduced through the sharing of expertise or other financial resources. "It could be joint train- ing or a broader service. You can't' consider what the costs are today with- out looking at the legisla- tion and regulations which are coming for- ward," said the mayor. Holman noted that at one time it had been noted that there were 32 pumper trucks in depart- ments across the coun- ties. The trucks are required to be changed every 20 years. "When you take $250,000 and close to $300,000 as the average cost per truck that is quite an expense," he said. United Counties to go ahead with study of combined fire services the Review-Mirror April 5, 2018 – 3 Rideau Lakes will be selling the two used ambulances which were purchased for the fire department because there is no room to store the vehicles inside. Fire Chief Steve Fournier will also be examining another storage problem to determine if the purchase of a new pumper will present the need for an expansion of the Westport fire station. Township council passed a bylaw on Mon- day to ratify an agreement with the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority to undertake 150 inspections this year. Through the septic rein- spection program's ten years of operation since 2008 the program's effec- tiveness in identifying defective systems has been confirmed with more than half of the properties 977 inspected systems in need or remediation (431) or replacement (31). At the program's incep- tion an inspection sched- ule was followed to ensure that all the township's lakes were inspected over a multi-year schedule. This year's lakes were selected after they were identified in a 2014 water- shed report by the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority to benefit from closer monitoring. Council decided to drop a voluntary component of the program after it was found that there was not enough compliance by res- idents who had been offered the voluntary, no- cost septic inspections. In 2017 only four prop- erty owners participated in the volunteer program which cost the township $1200 in mailing costs. This year's agreement with the RVCA has costs of $14,250 with initial notification to selected landowners to begin May 7 and field inspections to be conducted from May 21 to September 28 and a report to be completed by the end of November. 150 property owners slated for mandatory septic inspections Adrianna Foster wil be participating in an organ donor awareness event in Newboro next Saturday.
