Once dried, the nave was turned on a lathe to make it more hub-shaped. The hub was then mortised to receive the spokes. After the spokes were ham- mered in, it was then set in a 'wheelwright's pit' where the felloes were fitted to the spokes. This part occurred on the 'wheelwright's bench' and there the felloes were planed, and shaved, until ready for tiring at the blacksmiths.
