MAY 2018 THE WOLVERINE 55   MICHIGAN RECRUITING "Coach Pep is quiet, but he's just a cool coach overall," Johnson said. "He's somebody I can really relate to. If I was to go to Michigan I know I could go to him with anything. If I needed anything he'd be there for me." Johnson, the No. 15 player in the state of Michigan, said he might like to get his commitment out of the way this spring and definitely before his senior season kicks off. Finally, Michigan is also in a re- ally good spot with Kentwood (Mich.) East Kentwood four-star de- fensive tackle Mazi Smith. The 6-3, 302-pounder has bonded well with defensive line coach Greg Mattison and the rest of the staff. "It's mostly Greg Mattison," Smith said. "He knows what types of play- ers he wants and what type of player I am. You can see what his D-line has been doing. No matter what type of year Michigan has, their D-line has been an anchor for a long time." Smith — Rivals' No. 6 recruit in Michigan, and No. 10 defensive tackle and No. 150 overall pros- pect nationally — is as coveted as they come, but he's high on U-M. He would fill a position of need as well, making him a priority moving forward. ❏ U-M appears to be in good shape with Kentwood (Mich.)
