72 THE WOLVERINE MAY 2018 BY AUSTIN FOX F o r m e r M i c h i g a n d e f e n s i v e tackle Maurice Hurst was held out of the NFL Scouting Combine Feb. 27-March 5 in Indianapolis after he was diagnosed with a heart con- dition, but the issue has since been cleared up. Hurst expanded on the matter at Michigan's pro day March 23, where he measured 6-1 and 291 pounds, ran a 4.91 in the 40-yard dash, and posted a 31-inch vertical jump and 29 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press. "After the combine, I talked to my trainer at Michigan," he recalled. "I got in contact with whomever I could to figure out where I could be re- tested and make sure everything was clear. That's when I went to Harvard — they rechecked the EKG, did some stress tests and had me undergo an MRI. "I knew about the condition dur- ing my time at Michigan, but had gotten tested and cleared my fresh- man year — I was surprised they held me out of the combine because of it. I was so happy I was able to do everything at the pro day, though." Hurst doesn't believe the condi- tion should have any impact on his professional future and still hopes to be a high pick in the NFL Draft April 26-28. "I think teams view me the ex- act same way," he said. "If you're cleared, you're cleared. I'll still hope- fully go in the first round. Teams ask what type of player you think you are, and my answer is a 'Playmaker and someone who's going to be pro- ductive and disruptive.' "I try to impact the game, and that's something that will translate well to the next level." The NHL CARL HAGELIN SHINES IN PLAYOFF VICTORY Former U-M hockey standout and current Pittsburgh Penguin Carl Hagelin played a key role in his squad picking up a 7-0 playoff victory over Philadelphia April 11. Hagelin is one of 11 former Michi- gan hockey players that are compet- ing in the Stanley Cup playoffs after 21 appeared in an NFL game during the 2017-18 campaign.
