GOLD AND BLACK ILLUSTRATED VOLUME 28, ISSUE 5 27 Redshirt freshman defensive backs might be mainstays for years to come BY KYLE CHARTERS KCharters@GoldandBlack.com K enneth Major could have played last season. Purdue mulled it over, thinking the rookie cornerback might have given the Boilermakers a reserve to take the pressure off starters Da'Wan Hunte and Josh Okonye. But there was the hamstring issue. And there was the maturity issue. Both served to keep the 6-foot, 195-pounder from playing in Year 1. He expects — and Purdue hopes — there will be no such hindrances in Year 2. He's glad for that, because making it through his redshirt year, while dealing with an annoying injury and adjusting to col- lege life, was difficult. "A lot of times, I wanted to go home," said Major, a Hopkins- ville, Ky., native. "Thankfully for my dad, my mom, they just stayed on me, (saying) 'You can't come home. There's noth- ing here.' It's a small town. There are better opportunities up here." Tom Campbell Dedrick Mackey kept showing up during the spring, including in the game with his two interceptions, one a pick six. Corner-stones?
