Strike, lockout
deadline for all
Cornwall, Ont.,
city workers
CORNWALL, Ont. — The On-
tario Ministry of Labour issued
a "no-board report" on May 7
for Canadian Union of Public
Employees (CUPE), Local 3251,
inside workers in Cornwall, Ont.
A strike or lockout deadline is
now set for 12:01 a.m. on May 23,
following the May 17 deadline
set earlier for paramedics, out-
side workers and library work-
ers, said the union.
"Inside workers have reached
the same impasse faced by all
other city workers," said Keith
Sandford, CUPE national repre-
sentative. "We need to see some
movement at the bargaining ta-
ble if we are going to avoid a city-
wide work stoppage. We're ready
to work hard in negotiations, but
we're also preparing for a strike
as necessary."
The inside employees work
in water and wastewater, as by-
law officers, building inspectors,
child-care workers, in social
services, in the finance depart-
ment, in addition to other de-
partments.
Bargaining dates have been
scheduled for all locals and both
parties are working with a medi-
ator from the Ontario Ministry
of Labour, said CUPE.
Windsor Star
employees
ratify new
3-year deal
WINDSOR, Ont. — Workers
at the Windsor Star voted 91 per
cent on May 6 in favour of a new
three-year collective agreement
with Postmedia Network.
"We didn't come away with a
lot of money, but we kept our de-
fined benefits pension plan, and
we held on to most of our health
benefits, including those for our
retirees," said Julie Kotsis, chair
of the joint council of unions,
which represents 180 members
of Unifor, Locals 240 and 517-G.
Windsor Star workers under-
stand well the news industry's
current struggles, "but then they
see Postmedia's executives get-
ting big pay raises," said Kotsis.
Employees earning less than
$20 an hour will receive a one
per cent wage increase on June 3.
All Windsor Star employees will
also receive a 0.5 per cent wage
increase in May 2020. Over the
previous seven years, Windsor
Star employees had only re-
ceived a one per cent wage hike,
said the union.
Toronto Legal
Aid workers
ratify fi rst
contract
TORONTO — The 14 mem-
bers of Ontario Public Service
Employees Union (OPSEU), Lo-
cal 525, who work at Legal Aid
Ontario Toronto North District
voted to ratify their first collec-
tive agreement on May 4.
The vote ends management's
ability to unilaterally dictate
working conditions such as wag-
es, disability benefits and vaca-
tions, said the union.
The one-year collective agree-
ment includes a 1.5 per cent
wage increase, and a provision
that will ensure the workers
also receive any further wage
increases negotiated by OPSEU
members at Legal Aid Ontario's
provincial head office.
The agreement also enshrines
a collaborative process between
management and local union
representatives to identify and
resolve issues on the ground,
said the union.
