By Margaret Brand The Review-Mirror Family, friends and col- leagues will be gathering on Thursday at the Lou Jeffries Arena in Gananoque for the funeral of Leeds Grenville MP Gord Brown. Last Wednesday morn- ing he died in his Parlia- ment Hill office after suf- fering from a heart attack. Brown, 57, had served Leeds Grenville as their MP since his election in 2004 as a member of the Conservative party after losing by 55 votes to the Liberals in the 2000 elec- tion when running under the Canadian Alliance banner. Tributes to the MP and condolences for the family were in the news last week from across party lines in the House of Commons where Brown was renowned for his ability to unite MPs from all parties to advance the issues that were important to him and his constituents. Brown was a familiar face across the riding and an important ally for Rideau Lakes and the Rideau Canal when the Conservatives' cuts in 2012 took a big slice out of resources for the Rideau Canal. "While it certainly was a long time coming Gord fought for it for many months, to keep this asset in pristine condition. Gord took a lot of flak for fight- ing for what he thought was needed for the Rideau Canal," said Rideau Lakes Mayor Ron Holman describing him as a cham- pion for the riding. "I considered him a per- sonal friend as well as well as a political friend. We've had many good discus- sions on the needs for the country and for the needs of our local community," he said. Brown's involvement in politics began as a member of the Young Conservatives, an experi- ence Chaffey's Lock mari- na owner Dave Brown shared as a fellow student at Carleton University in Ottawa. "We worked on the leadership campaign for Gordon Mulroney in 1983. Over the years Gord remained in politics," said Brown who admired his friend's commitment to his community. "He was always avail- able in the community and always reachable," said Brown who noted that commitment to politics comes at a cost. "You have lost your personal time with your family and ultimately you don't eat well you don't exercise well," he said. After graduation and returning to Gananoque By Margaret Brand The Review-Mirror Westport's wastewater lagoons filled to a critical capacity last week, trigger- ing the hauling of effluent to the wastewater treat- ment plant in Smiths Falls. The cost of hauling is still at the wastewater treatment plant construc- tion contractor's expense as it has been over the last five months. Heavy rains over the last few weeks have brought lagoon levels up due to below ground infil- tration into the wastewater pipes as well as inflow into the system. The haulers were called last Monday after the remaining capacity in the lagoons had been reduced to 6,000 cubic meters, past the 7,500 cubic meter trig- ger point determined by the village's engineering consultants. "The flow from infiltra- tion and inflow is still high and so the hauling will continue until we get back some of that capacity," Mayor Robin Jones said. Last Thursday the con- tractors had initially had four trucks hauling the wastewater but had reduced the number down to one.
