The Leeds & Grenville Poverty Reduction Alliance, United Way Leeds & Grenville and the Employment + Education Centre will be hosting a conversation with the political candidates in the upcoming provincial elec- tion this Monday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The event is at the Employment + Education Centre, 105 Strowger Blvd. in Brockville. An estimated one in seven Canadians — or 4.8 million people — current- ly live in conditions of poverty. That means that 4.8 million people struggle to meet their most basic needs every day; to make challenging decisions like paying their rent, food and other bills. People living in poverty are at higher risk of home- lessness, have an increased risk of poor mental and physical health and suffer great depths of anxiety and emotional struggles. The event sponsors want to give the citizens of Leeds & Grenville an opportunity to better understand what each political party will be doing in this region to sup- port the reduction of this issue. The evening will include two people with lived experience of pover- ty sharing their stories, predetermined questions and then questions from the floor. Doreen Barnes will act as moderator for the evening. The Leeds Grenville Poverty Alliance is a col- laborative of organizations and individuals working today to reduce poverty in our communities. For more information, please contact Loretta Cor- beil of the Poverty Alliance of Leeds & Grenville at loretta@eecentre.com or 613-803-8794. Series of other debates already scheduled The candidates will also be participating in a num- ber of all candidate meet- ings across the riding including one at the Tole- do Legion Thursday, May 10 at 7 p.m. The event is organized by the Leeds-Grenville Federation of Agriculture. and is focusing on agricul- ture and rural issues. Other debates are tak- ing place on Tues, May 15, at 7 p.m. at the Brockville Arts Centre, a gathering organized by the Brockville Chamber of Commerce. On Wed., May 23 at 7 p.m., the Gananoque Rotary Club is organizing an all-candidates meeting at the Gananoque Arena. A final debate, orga- nized by the North Grenville Times is taking place Thurs., May 31 at 7:30 at the North Grenville Municipal Centre. Queen's principal Daniel Woolf has addressed his students on the need for respecting Rideau Waterway Land Trust (RWLT) rules at what has become a popu- lar hiking spot for Queens students, Rock Dunder. The principal sent out a letter to students this week to address the issue of entering the property beyond the site's operating calendar of May 15 to November 15. "After trying for some time to give our students the benefit of the doubt that they were simply con- fused about the closure period, it is now quite clear to the management that the trespassing signs are being willfully ignored," wrote Woolf The principal was con- tacted by RWLT last fall after it became apparent through physical evi- dence, social media and the sheer number of Queen's students on the trails that the message was not getting through. "Sadly over the months, Queen's students have been disregarding the need to treat this area with care and respect," he said. RWLT chair Peter Han- nah hopes the message will get through. Visitors who don't follow the newly installed no parking signs at the site's entrance on Hwy. 15 can also be ticketed by police. The Township of Rideau Lakes first nomi- nation papers received this month have included can- didates for North Crosby, South Crosby and the Upper Canada District School Board. On Wednesday North Crosby councilor Bob Lavoie was the first to submit his nomination papers. The councilor is look- ing for a third term after being elected for the first time in 2010 to represent North Crosby. Claire Gunnewiek is looking for a second term to represent South Crosby. School board trustee Susan Richards is looking for a fifth term after first being elected in 2003. Nominations opened Tuesday, May 1 for the Oct. 22 election. Nomina- tions will close on July 27 at 2 p.m. Candidates are not allowed to incur election expenses until after they have submitted their nom- ination papers. •Continued from page 1 Last November the excess capacity in the lagoons had reached 19,000 cubic meters by Nov. 21, the date which the system had been con- tracted to be operational. The contractor can be held responsible for haul- ing up to 19,000 cubic meters, the excess capaci- ty which the village could have had if the system had been completed at the con- tracted date. The new system has been operating at a capaci- ty of 525 cubic meters per day but will not be fully commissioned or be deemed substantially com- plete until one of the pipes in the system receives a successful pass of a pres- sure test said Jones. "Council is confident that if the system had been operational when it was supposed to we wouldn't have had to do any haul- ing. We are also confident that moving forward haul- ing will not be required in other years," she said. •Continued from page 1 and the family hospitality business Brown served two terms as a municipal councilor, served as Chair of the St. Lawrence Parks Commission and was president of the Chamber of Commerce. In 2004 the merging of the Canadian Alliance party and the Progressive Conservatives and a suc- cessful campaign took Brown to Ottawa. MPP Steve Clark enjoyed many public events with Brown with whom he shared his con- stituency. "Gord had a tremen- dous passion for public service and it made him an outstanding MP. The joy he took from his work was evident whenever you met him. He was so proud of our riding and was a true champion for all of East- ern Ontario and its peo- ple," noted Clark on his Facebook page. He is survived by his wife, Claudine Courtois, his two sons Chance, and Tristan, his brother Jeff Brown (Courtney Small), his sister Janice Deryaw (Pat Deryaw), his nephews Colin, Sean, and Graeme Brown and his niece Nicole Brown. He was predeceased by his father Sydney Brown, his mother Lillian Brown, and his brother Greg Brown. His funeral will take place on Thursday, May 10 at 11 a.m. at the Lou Jeffries Arena followed by a burial at the Gananoque Cemetery and a reception at the Firehall Theatre from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Vis- itation was to take place on Wednesday at the Tompkins Funeral Home in Gananoque.
