Chemical options to help manage nematodes also exist. With the right foliar spray, potato growers can protect their crop against nematodes and increase the quality and quantity of their seasonal harvest. One such treatment is Movento from Bayer. Movento insecti- cide's two-way systemic action moves throughout the entire plant system, allowing for applications to the leaves and thereby provid- ing protection from above-ground pests. It also moves to the roots to protect plants from nematodes. A potato infected with Columbia root-knot nematode (left) and a healthy potato. The sac shown here has broken open, releasing the eggs and juveniles. USDA-ARS photo by Xiaohong Wang Microscope image of potato cyst nematode eggs spilling out of a ruptured cyst. Researchers continue to test trap crops to find ones that can make the pest hatch from these cysts and then starve for lack of a host. Photo by Potato Cyst Nem- atode Research Group/ARS/APHIS.
