It wasn't until he was beginning to top out on the pay scale at that job and after his father, the elder Tom Manning, had started Tom Manning & Associates (in 1982) that the younger Manning pondered a career change. That year was 1985. "I wasn't ready for middle management, and if I was to make a career change, well, doing so at 28 years old gave me a better chance of rebounding from a mistake than at 48. So, I made the leap."
