100 ■ THE WOLVERINE 2018 FOOTBALL PREVIEW DEFENSIVE LINE 100 ■ THE WOLVERINE 2018 FOOTBALL PREVIEW DEFENSIVE LINE PLAYER BIOS POSITION COACH Greg Mattison is entering his fourth season as defensive line coach under Jim Harbaugh and his eighth year con- secutively on the U-M staff after previously holding the role of de- fensive coordinator for Brady Hoke from 2011-14. He's in his second stint with the Wolverines, having also worked in Ann Arbor from 1992-96, when he mentored the defensive line and served as the coordinator his final two years. During the 2017 season, Mattison's defensive front helped Michigan lead the nation in pass de- fense and third-down conversions for the second year in a row. Under Mattison's leadership, defen- sive lineman Chase Winovich broke out in 2017 and recorded at least one tackle for loss in 12 of 13 games en route to first-team All-Big Ten honors. He also mentored fellow All-Big Ten first-teamers Rashan Gary and Maurice Hurst, who was named an All-American, last year. After starting off in the prep ranks, Mattison se- cured his first full-time college job coaching the defensive line with Cornell in 1977 and spent the next 18 years of his coaching career working with the fronts at Northwestern (1978-80), Western Michigan (1982-86), Navy (1987-88), Texas A&M (1989-91) and Michigan (1992-96). He also held coordinator roles with the Broncos and Wolverines. Mattison also was a coordinator and defensive line coach at Notre Dame (1997-2004) and Florida (2005-07) before a three-year stint with the NFL's Baltimore Ravens (2008-10) under John Harbaugh, coordinating the defense his final two seasons there before returning to U-M.
