From the Editor contributors New Beginnings for many of us, a new year means a new beginning. That clean slate can be just the push we need to recommit to last years resolutionsmore exercise, a homeimprovement project, a new financial plan. (Those are some of my New Years resolutions, anyway.) Now that 2013 is here, like many of you, Im sure, I feel refreshed, and excited to find out whats in store. But a new beginning isnt restricted to the arrival of a new year. In fact, the phrase feels especially pertinent for this issue for a few reasons. Its our first of 2013, and its also largely dedicated to weddings, the ceremonious start of a couples new life together. For you soon-to-be brides and groomsand those of you with kids or grandkids who plan to wedweve filled our pages with beautiful gowns, shoes, jewels, and accessories. Also in this issue, Ma10 nshoremag.com January/February 2013 REV_NSJanFeb13_Contributors.indd 10 ria Lekkakos, owner of M. Lekkakos Salon, Spa & Boutique in Wenham, and her new husband, Boston salon scion Marc Harris, shared the story of their loveand their lavish 2012 nuptialswith writer Karyn Polewaczyk in Pair of Aces on page 106. Assistant Editor Kiley Jacques connected with some people who play key roles in many couples weddings: the wedding band Flipside (The Wedding Singers, page 34), and Pat Brown, Rockports town clerk and a justice of the peace (Love Proctor, page 176). Oh, and because weddings and travel go hand in handdestination weddings are more popular than ever, and, hello, honeymoons!weve extended our travel coverage for this issue, to places like Ireland, South Africa, and Vietnam. But theres one more reason that the phrase new beginning is significant for us at Northshore right now. This is the first issue with our new design director, Ryan Jolley, bringing to life in its pages the compelling stories that our editors, writers, stylists, and photographers have been working on for the last several weeks. Ryan arrived at Northshore after six years at the helm of Sail magazine in Boston (read: hes well versed in the coastal lifestyle, something most of us can immediately identify with), bringing with him a fresh perspective and an honest interest in the wonderful world that exists north of the city. Please join me in welcoming Ryan, and write to us, e-mail us, and connect with us online to tell us how you think were doing. So, best wishes to you brides and grooms out there, and to everyone, heres to a new year and new beginnings! Lindsay Lambert, editor lindsay@rmsmg.com Scott Kearnan Boston-based Kearnan (Engines of Change, page 90, and Around the World in 18 Ways, page 138) is a writer and former editor of STUFF magazine. He focuses on arts and entertainment, interviewing stars from Lady Gaga to Wyclef Jean. But storytelling is his passion, and his political, travel, and human-interest stories have run in The Phoenix, Boston Spirit, and Entrepreneur. Follow him on Twitter: @thewritestuffSK. Meg Quinn-DeBoer Ipswich writer QuinnDeBoer found Nancy Kerrigan (Ice Queen, page 144) to be surprisingly down to earth. Even with two Olympic medals, shes basically a doting soccer mom who deeply misses the father she lost two years ago, she says. Quinn-DeBoer has written for NorthShore Life, the Ipswich Chronicle, and Boston Event Guide. Her childrens books, Postcards from the Topsfield Fair and Postcards from Ipswich, will soon be joined by Postcards from the North Shore. Michael Basu Basu, a photographer, has been shooting bands, designers, and troublemakers for Boston-area publications sinceNovember2009. Big thanks to Chelsea Berry and The Shalin Liu Performance Center for helping us out during the shoot, Basu says of Rising Star (page 44). Basu adds that Shalin Liu was a welcome change of pace to the dingy rock clubs where hesusuallyshooting. See more of his work at MichaelBasu.com. Glenn Scott Photographer Scott lives and shoots on the North Shore, working with crews out ofhisdowntown Beverly photography studio. Of Northshore Style Director Lysa Pelletier (the two styled and shot this issues Northern Exposure product pages, as well as Vow & Then on page 128) he says, Shooting with her is always more fun than work, and this issue was no exception. Editor photograph by glenn scott 11/20/12 4:10 PM
