For the 2.625-inch diameter ornaments, with a wheel gap of 1.125 inches, the adjust- ment to the vertical dimension only of the drawing is 90.4 percent. For a 1-inch gap, the adjustment is 92 1/2 percent. Note: For more formula fun, check out the sidebar on page 16. Finally, using a properly sized jig, like the one previously mentioned, can prevent the problem altogether. If the jig is built with the circumference on the turning wheels equal to the circumference of the ornament, there is no need to adjust the drawing. The disadvantage is that it limits your engraving to the band around the equator. The silver is exposed but it is dull. While the silvering in some ornaments can be inconsistent or of poor quality, the most likely cause is that the glass has been slightly frosted by the engraving. It's just a matter of adjusting the power — in this case, a little lower. Settings may vary between different manufacturers. The paint is not completely removed. If it's a light residue, a cleaner and a non- scratch scrub pad may be able to take it off. If not, a little more power may be required. It takes some time and effort to zero in on the settings. That's why it's important to have extra stock on hand. The outer edges of the engraved areas are not clear. Most likely the graphic is too large and the edges are outside of the prime area of the focal range of the lens. Do not design what cannot be executed. It's tempting to be elaborate with drawings and fail to recognize that it may be troublesome or even impossible to physically engrave the design. Do not overstep the bounds of where the laser is effective. The photo/grayscale graphic is either too dark or too faded. It's difficult to engrave a photograph or grayscale graphic on a glass ball ornament. The paint layer is too thin and the settings range is too tight. It's not, however, impossible. Here's where taking advantage of dots can help. Converting the graphic to halftones, like the graphics in newspapers, can result in an acceptable image. The consistent dot color value of the half-tone mode makes Tools of the trade: some of the useful items for personalizing glass ball ornaments. This jig utilizes the hold-down clamp of the rotary. The ornament is kept in place on the dowel with magnets.
