44 THE SHOP SEPTEMBER 2018 The technology can tie itself into the smart home in addition to being part of the connected car. For OEMs, the system comes with five e-Fob Bluetooth LE proximity sensors. The sensors can be positioned on the passenger- and driver-side mirrors/door handles, passenger and driver door interior or lower interior B-pillars, the trunk/lift- gate, and the center console. Once the sensors are strategically posi- tioned around the vehicle and wired into the ECU, the customer need not worry about their keys ever again (but they must hold onto their smartphone)! POWERSPORTS: THE NEW FRONTIER After your shop gets comfortable with installing vehicle security, the next big thing is protecting customers' toys such as UTVs, side-by-sides, boats and motorcy- cles. Owners of these vehicles are passionate about them, and they are ripe for theft. Very soon, Directed Electronics will be taking the connected car off-road with the introduction of the Viper Powersports GPS (VPS450). "The Viper Powersports GPS is a revo- lutionary product specifically designed for today's popular powersports vehicles such as ATVs, motorcycles and snowmo- biles," says Geoff Weathersby, VP of con- nected car. "The Viper VPS450 provides consumers peace of mind knowing their powersports vehicles are safe and secure when they are away from the vehicle. If the vehicle is moved or tampered with, the customer will receive a notification to their phone and they will be able to locate the vehicle using GPS." The Viper Powersports GPS system is weather-resistant and includes a starter kill, accelerometer and tamper-proof backup battery, plus water-resistant remote con- trols. Onboard is a compact siren with shock and tilt sensors. The alarm will sound if the vehicle is tilted or towed, in addition to alerting the owner. It is integrated with the traditional Viper SmartStart app, so customers can monitor their vehicles anytime. There is a water mode for personal water- craft and boats that optimizes the sleep mode and location for vehicles that are afloat. The units also feature an ultra-low current consumption designed for small bat- tery systems and vehicles that are stored for prolonged periods of time between use.
