Young Thug had previously said he wouldn't be releasing any new music this year, a promise few expected him to keep. And so it proved, with a surprise EP dropping with some major collabs. To many fans in the UK Famous Dex isn't very, well, famous. He will be best known for his Rich Forever collaboration tapes with Rich the Kid and Jay Critch as well as the A$AP Rocky featuring 'Pick it up', the video for which only arrived in late January. Pete Rock is one of the greatest hip hop producers of all time and any show with him included is a historic moment, but this is something even more special. This could be about to change though. Two weeks after its release 'Japan' has racked up over 7 million views on YouTube (for the lyric video) and over 12 million on Spotify. While the success of 'Pick it up' could – harshly – be attributed to Rocky's feature, 'Japan' is all Dex, and has a beat that perfectly captures his sound. Dex doesn't make hype tunes, nor does he flow over songs smoothly, but producer J Gramm has served Dex with the beat to perfectly compliment his cadence. It's swiftly gathering momentum and don't be surprised if it propels Dex to the scene's top table. This September, on a night that is unmissable for anyone that loves live music or calls themselves a hip- hop head, Jazz Cafe hosts the UK debut show of Pete Rock's first live band, The Soul Brothers. Named after his iconic 1992 record 'Mecca & The Soul Brother', Rock & The Soul Brothers will play live renditions taken from his huge catalogue of his timelessly jazz- inspired hip hop productions such as 'Soul Brother No.1' and 'They Reminisce Over You'. Thug has been relatively quiet since his joint tape with Future was released late last year, hardly doing any features and only releasing the tribute song 'MLK' this year. The hibernation is now officially over, with the prospect of a further two EPs to be released in the near future. Each song on Hear No Evil boasts an A-list feature, with Nicki Minaj the standout collab on the track 'Anybody'. Long-time collaborator Lil Uzi Vert lends his voice to the Southside produced 'Up', whilst 21 Savage features on 'Now'. 'Up' harks back to early, erratic Thug, with a high pitched whine riding over a snappy beat, the beat works better for Uzi, who takes a relaxed approach to his verse that flows over the production smoothly, in stark contrast to the purposefully grating Thug tone. 'Now' exhibits the Thug we've become familiar with, a more traditional rap verse that manages to maintain individuality, as per usual 21 intones an effortlessly cool verse that oozes that sound of total indifference. 'Anybody' is the standout track and has gathered the most views on YouTube so far. It's a sinister track, with the chorus rapped over a drum-heavy beat and underlying moans. There is also a sign video to the song, possibly commissioned for Thug's deaf brother.
