www.BLUEANDGOLD.com OCT. 29, 2018 11 UNDER THE DOME One of only 30 unanimous All- American selections in Notre Dame football history, 1970-72 Fighting Irish defensive tackle and former captain Greg Marx died Oct. 5 after battling numerous health ailments in recent years. He was 68. Marx, the Defensive Player of the Year in the state of Michigan in 1967 at Detroit Catholic Central High, was part of one of the greatest college football recruiting hauls ever along a defensive line in 1968. In addition to second-round draft pick Marx at tackle, the group fea- tured first-round picks Walt Patulski (the No. 1 overall pick in 1972) at end and Mike Kadish at tackle, plus third-round choice Fred Swendsen at end. A fifth defensive lineman from that same class, tackle Mike Zikas, was selected in the seventh round. Marx was medically redshirted as a sophomore in 1969, but in 1970-71 he and his linemen were the heart and soul of the Fighting Irish teams. In 21 games those two years, the op- position scored 14 or fewer points 18 times — and seven or less in 14 of them. This was highlighted by the 24-11 win over No. 1 Texas in the 1971 Cotton Bowl, ending the Longhorns' 30-game winning streak while the Irish finished No. 2 in the country. As a fifth-year senior in 1972, Marx was selected a co-captain and became a two-time CoSIDA Academic All- American, earning a post-graduate scholarship from the NCAA and Na- tional Football Foundation, in addi- tion to his unanimous All-American on-field achievement. He also was involved in the study help program with minority students, and spoke at local churches and schools. He finished his career with 263 tackles (24 for loss) and was a sec- ond-round selection of the Atlanta Falcons. Marx played one season in the NFL before opting to attend law school, earning his Juris Doctor de- gree from Notre Dame Law School in 1977 that would lead him to the banking and securities industries. Marx is survived by four children and six grandchildren. bit.ly/Garth18 SHOP NOW BUY NOW, FREE IN-STORE PICK UP GEAR UP FOR GARTH (800) 647-4641 NDcatalog.com Greg Marx: 1950-2018 Marx, who played defensive tackle for the Irish from 1970‑72, is one of only 30 unanimous All‑ American selections in Notre Dame football history.
