128 ■ THE WOLFPACKER ■ PACK PAST money for the Wolfpack Club, a symbiotic relationship since the athletics department was more than $70,000 in debt to the din- ing hall as well as $70,000 in debt to John- son & Lambe Sporting Goods. Stewart, using modern fundraising tech- niques, helped wipe away that debt and made the athletics department financially stable by connecting donations to ticket sales to basketball and football games, the Dixie Classic and the ACC Tournament. He resigned from the position in the middle of the 1958 Dixie Classic in a disagreement with Clogston over basketball tickets. Stewart became a successful insurance salesman, a noted public speaker and sto- ryteller, and the distributor of custom-de- signed NC State silk scarves and ties. With the death of Bubas earlier this year, Stewart is the only surviving participant in one of the oddest chapters in NCAA, ACC and NC State history. Even after a century, he's never experienced anything like that day in the piney woods of Louisiana. (The details of this story come from Stew- art's personal recollections, which he shared with me during the course of a two-day in- terview in his Raleigh home and from a re- markable piece in Sport Magazine called "A Scholarship for Jackie" written by North Carolina native Furman Bisher in 1957.) ■ GO WOLFPACK!!!
