A native of El Dorado Hills, Calif., Book is looking to become the first Irish California QB since Beuerlein in 1986 to win at the Los Angeles Coliseum. 5-3 Mark posted by ninth-year Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly against archrival USC. He has the third most victories by an Irish coach against the Trojans, behind only Lou Holtz (9-1-1 from 1986-96) and Frank Leahy (8-1-1 from 1941-43 and 1946-53). That figure entering the weekend of Nov. 17 ranked third nationally — behind the two teams that also were ahead of it in the College Football Playoff rankings released Nov. 13: Clemson (89.9) and Alabama (87.3). The grade is based on a combination of sacks, hits and hurries on the quarterback. 1936 Per NDNation poster "Olson," this was the year the St. Mary Gaels played a football game in the nation's three largest cities — New York, Los Angeles and Chicago — the way Notre Dame is this year. It is believed to be the only other school to do that in football other than Notre Dame. The 2018 Fighting Irish this month played in Chicago on Nov. 3 (Northwestern), New York Nov. 17 (Syracuse in Yankee Stadium) and wrap up the regular season at Los Angeles Nov. 24 (USC). This is the eighth time in school history the Irish played in all three of those cities, with the previous such excursions occurring in 1992. The 1936 St. Mary's team, coached by Notre Dame graduate and former Knute Rockne center Edward "Slip" Madigan, played during the month of October at Loyola Marymount in the Los Angeles Coliseum, Fordham at New York City's Polo Grounds, and Marquette University at Chicago's Soldier Field.
