And when her youngest son had medical issues, the community rallied to the family's assistance. "I just knew this was where I wanted to be. I didn't want to be in Boston," Bandereck says. The original Topsfield Bakeshop opened in a space tucked back off Main Street in 2010. Around the same time, Chris left his job in food service management to join the burgeoning business, adding his practical business sense to his wife's passion and vision. One day early on, Bandereck was pitching her wares to a potential customer when her prospect asked if she baked whoopie pies. Bandereck had never attempted the regional treat, but decided to give it a shot. The resulting desserts were a very big hit. "It just turned out to be a big deal," Bandereck says. In the years since, the bakeshop has developed dozens of Chris and crew bake whoopie pies and cakes from scratch.
