HIP HOP / RNB 35 7 www.guestlist.net Issue 47 / 2013 S ND GE LE CYPRESS HILL Cypress Hill. Need we say more? This group set the world of hip-hop on fire in the late 80s/early 90s with their first two critically acclaimed groundbreaking albums. Their first album, the self entitled Cypress Hill contained the old school head banger How I Could Just KIll A Man, an anthem of the early 90s. Their second album, Black Sunday, debuted at number one in 1993, affording them the highest Soundscan for a rap group at that time. With their second album still in the charts, this also made Cypress Hill the first rap group to have 2 albums in the top 10 at the same time. With the immense commercial and underground success of Insane in the Brain, the album went triple platinum in the U.S. selling somewhere in the region of 3.25 million copies. One of the most recognisable features of a Cypress Hill joint is the exaggerated nasal raps of member B-Real. B-Real describes his rapping style in the book Check the Technique, as:"high and annoying... the nasal style I have was just something that I developed... my more natural style wasn't so pleasing to [DJ Muggs and Sen Dog's] ears" and of the originality of his style, he says in the book How to Rap, "you want to stand out from the others and just be distinct... when you got something that can separate you from everybody else, you gotta use it to your advantage." And use it to their advantage they did. JANUARY RELEASES THE GAME FT.
