USICERINKS.COM JANUARY.FEBRUARY.2019 / 15 silver LEED-certified, meaning it's built to be energy and resource efficient and cut down on pollution. Environmental friend- liness lowers operating costs, as well as fits into the city's parallel commitment to sustainability. As Irvine uses recycled water in irrigation to address water shortages, the arena will use recycled water throughout its building as well. Team Players Of course, the Ducks will also benefit from the arena's modern features. Before, they split their practice times between Anaheim ICE and the Honda Center. Anaheim ICE was a two-sheet facility built in the 1990s when The Walt Disney Company created the Ducks, named after the 1992 film, the "Mighty Ducks." While that older arena was more basic, the new facility offers everything including a pre- mier locker room, weight training space, lounge, rehabilitation whirlpool, sauna, game room and office space. Hawkins has managed both former ice rinks for about a decade. He's impressed by the Ducks' dedication to the game. He notes how players Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry cut the check for all the equipment the NHL's learn to play pro- gram provides. "You know, if you want your child to play hockey, put them in the learn to play hockey program. They get free setup equipment literally paid for by Getzlaf and Perry," Hawkins says. "A lot of teams do that now, but (the Ducks have) been doing that for a long time here." And while that's exciting, for now, the grand opening of the rink in January is highly anticipated. "People are excited for four sheets of ice, more ice times, more availabilities, more programming and more leagues. And obviously our customers are excited from in-house hockey to travel hockey to youth hockey to adult league," says Hawkins. "There's a lot of buzz around the NHL side of it, too. The Ducks get- ting a state-of-the-art training center, 5,000 square-feet, the newest technology in their locker room. It just kind of brings us into [2019] here."
